Emergency

Water and houses don’t mix, its that simple. A slow leak will cause issues such as rot and mildew, a damp atmosphere making chest infections common, can weaken timber or, in severe cases rot the timber entirely making the dwelling unsafe, and is usually caused by loose fittings or poor installation.

A leak caused by a split pipe, a fitting coming totally apart, a split roof tank or a split cylinder can introduce a lot of water very quickly where you least want it, potentially bringing down ceilings and causing timber to swell.

• The first thing to do is shut the main water stopcock, and open all taps
• If the leak is on the hot or cold water supplies, and you have mains pressure at all outlets, the water should stop straight away
• If you have gravity hot and/or cold water, this will drain the large tank in the roof, at which point the water will stop
• If the leak is on the heating, it’s more involved, but shutting the stop cock will prevent water filling the heating expansion tank in the loft on an open vented system, preventing water entering the system.

Leak tracing and repair

Tracing a leak is usually more involved with water than with gas. It can be caused by anything from a burst water pipe to a failed mastic joint on a bath. As a result, tracing the source of the leak can become intrusive, requiring access under floors, behind walls or requiring removal of cabinets or sanitaryware, and can take 5 minutes or 5 hours to find, if water is tracking from one point to a weak spot elsewhere.

Therefore, leak tracing and repair will charged at a fixed hourly rate.

Renewal

Over time, due to constant daily use, taps and fittings can suffer reduced performance due to limescale and general wear and tear. I am available to change all moving parts in a domestic plumbing system, from WC float valves, to taps, to stopcocks.
